Hernia mesh is a product used to treat hernias. A hernia occurs when the wall of the abdomen breaks down, causing internal organs to squeeze through it. Hernia mesh is surgically placed to essentially patch up the hole in the abdominal wall.
Hernia mesh is a competitive market in the medical field. In an effort to be more competitive with sales of hernia mesh, some companies tried to come up with a “new and improved” product. They did so by coating the hernia mesh with certain substances, touting those mesh products as better and more effective at reducing inflammation. In reality, the coatings on the hernia mesh resulted in more complications for patients.
Physiomesh is a hernia mesh product that is made of polypropylene filaments that are woven into a fabric and then laminated. It was manufactured by Ethicon, a division of Johnson & Johnson. Ethicon has been defending thousands of lawsuits related to its transvaginal mesh products, which are also made out of polypropylene. They continue to deny that polypropylene does more harm than good for patients. Physiomesh first approved by the FDA in 2010, via the less rigorous 501(k) approval process. Two large medical studies subsequently found that Physiomesh carried higher rates of complications, including hernia recurrence and the need for re-operation. Due to this increased risk of complications, in May of 2016, Ethicon issued a voluntary global market withdrawal for its Physiomesh Flexible Composite Mesh product.
C-Qur hernia mesh is manufactured by Atrium Medical Corporation, a division of Maquet Cardiovascular, which is a subsidiary of the Getinge Group. C-Qur was first approved by the FDA, also via the less rigorous 510(k) process, in 2006. It too is a polypropylene mesh. C-Qur hernia mesh is coated with a gel made from omega 3 fatty acids. It was the first product of its kind to have an omega 3 fatty acid, a coating which actually has proved to result in higher complication rates for patients.
